Character Design Analysis: Lethe and Mnemosyne
I’m writing another analysis on Lethe and Mnemosyne because I can and they’re AWESOME.
Look at Mnemosyne (the pink one). Although her sister Lethe is smiling, she isn’t. In fact, Mnemosyne smiles in exactly one picture throughout her appearances.
If you don’t take my word for it, you can flip through all of Mnemosyne’s appearances yourself. ;)
I think this speaks a lot to both of the twins’ characters. Lethe is shown smiling quite often, in the majority of her appearances. Although she smiles, I’d say you could even call it sarcastic, if not somewhat sadistic (depending on the circumstances.) In fact. I’d even say it was a smirk instead of a smile. Although she’s smiling, her eyes are still very cold and you can tell it’s not genuine. Her smile shows that she is the more cynical twin. Her eyes also tell us a lot about her character. Lethe’s eyes are permanently fixed into a cold stare. Unlike Mnemosyne’s eyes, which slant downwards, Lethe’s slant upwards, which is commonly used in manga to indicate that a character is more mature and is often used with severe characters. All of this shows the reader that her innocence has been lost a long time ago and she is the more mature of the two twins.
On the flip side, Mnemosyne is never seen without a solemn expression. Despite this, I’d say her expressions are more genuine than Lethe’s. Unlike Lethe, who hides behind a severe smile, Mnemosyne’s feelings are always made clear to the reader via her expressions. Her doubt and worry are very evident in her countenance while Lethe hides behind a facade. Her eyes also reveal much about her. Mnemosyne’s eyes are soft, childlike, and slant downward (like I mentioned above, downturned eyes traditionally indicate that a character is innocent, childlike, and/or sweet). In fact, Sailor Mnemosyne and Sailor Moon’s eyes are very similar in appearance. The main difference is that Mnemosyne’s are very sad. She has managed to cling onto her innocence, but at the same time she has seen so much death, decay, and despair she bears a burden within her soul. When Mnemosyne actually smiles, it’s very genuine, sweet, and delicate. Her innocence shines from within.
The color of their fuku is also significant. Lethe wears dark green and Mnemosyne dons light pink. Green is darker and more masculine than pink. I believe Naoko picked this color to signify that Lethe is the dominant twin. By contrast, pink has always been traditionally associated with the feminine. This signifies how Mnemosyne is the gentler and quieter twin.
FOREVER REBLOG. Eeeee~ I love to see others appreciate my favorite twins.
Allow me just a moment to gush more on the two of them, especially Lethe.
But first, Mnemosyne. I think it’s significant that Mnemosyne’s eyes are very similar to Sailor Moon’s because I think that Mnemosyne is very similar to Usagi at heart, but the two of them have been shaped by radically different circumstances. Usagi had a fairly easy upbringing and when she did have troubles, she always had friends to lean on. Usagi did have times where she had to do thinks on her own, but she wasn’t ever like Mnemosyne, who only has one person to lean on, her beloved twin sister, Lethe. To make matters worse, Mnemosyne and Lethe’s planets are at war with each other, which means their love is every bit as forbidden as the love between Serenity and Endymion, yet neither one of them have the outside support that Serenity and Endymion had. So, in short, Mnemosyne has a lot of reason to be sad, but at heart she has the same type of pure, beautiful soul that Usagi does.
Which is why I think Seiya and Mnemosyne would make a great couple.
I think you are also correct when you say that Lethe’s expressions often aren’t genuine. I think that deep down she is just as scared as Mnemosyne is, but she doesn’t feel like she can show it because she needs to be strong for her sister. My personal headcanon is also that, in some ways, the war weighs more heavily on Lethe. She is a natural pessimist and she can’t take seeing so much death and still feel hope like Mnemosyne does. Whereas I think Mnemosyne treasures all of her memories, even the bad ones, I think that as the solider of oblivion, Lethe longs to forget, but can’t make use of the waters of her river.
I also really admire that Lethe will do anything to protect her sister, even if she does end up making the wrong choice. (Everyone makes wrong judgments, don’t they? The two agreed to work with Galaxia, but if they hadn’t, it would have meant not only their own deaths, but the destruction of their planets and the deaths of all the people living there. Moreover, Galaxia had promised to bring peace to their planets in exchange for serving her, which they wanted more than anything. I think if the choice was between having your planet destroyed and having yourself and your twin sister killed or siding with someone you had misgivings about, most people would make the choice Lethe did.) I think her choice was just as brave as some of the ones that Sailor Moon made in many ways.
Ask yourself this question, is it braver to fight to survive and protect your planet though your actions may be wrong, or is it braver to give up fighting and die in the name of justice? It’s not a question that is easy to answer.
Ooh, thank you so much for adding onto my post! :D It’s always appreciated~
You make a great point about their respective powers, memory and oblivion (forgetfulness). In Greek mythology, recently departed souls would enter Hades and drink from the river Lethe which stripped them of all of the memories of their lives. In this way, I think Sailor Lethe puts an emphasis on forgetfulness; she’d rather forget the good and the bad memories than to treasure the good ones while suffering from the bad.
Mnemosyne has always struck me as extremely Usagi-like. She abhors violence and the thought of hurting other Sailor Soldiers (she begs Lethe to be merciful towards Sailor Moon). She seems very hopeful to me, very dedicated to her loved ones, and very kindhearted and innocent. Had we seen more of her and Lethe I have no doubt we would have seen more of these traits emerge.
And Lethe- while more pessimistic and cynical, she treasures her loved ones above all else; namely her twin Mnemosyne. She doesn’t desire power. She doesn’t desire wealth or even respect. All she wants is to live peacefully with her beloved sister.
I think Lethe is very determined. She doesn’t enjoy the acts she’s ordered to commit, she endures them so that she’ll finally be able to be happy with Mnemosyne.
Anyway, perfect babies who need to be in the 2013 anime or I will cry.

Telling someone they’re not good enough is not okay
Telling someone they’re not good enough is not okay
I don’t care if you’re joking. I don’t care if you think ‘It will push them to work harder.’ Because it isn’t a joke, and it will not always make someone want to work harder to prove you wrong.
Sometimes they accept it as a fact, then they live with a mindset of “Why try when I’m just going to fail?”
It’s not okay.
I remember acing my AP European History test and being ecstatic about it until I told my father and he shrugged it off like it was nothing. Then I felt terrible for feeling so proud of myself.
This sort of shit fucks people up man. Perfectionism is not something that can be obtained and it is a horrible, negative schema to get stuck in. No matter how well I did it was never good enough for my mom. “Go get involved! (when I was younger)” “Well now that you’re involved now I have to drive you places…” “Man Tae Kwon Do is getting pretty expensive” “Why would you quit? You quit everything! You’re a quitter.” “Omg why’d you get a B?” “Oh you got all As…eh.” Currently going through therapy to get over this mentality.
"Everyone else can do this, why can’t you?" "You’re just being lazy, you need to work harder." "No, don’t give me excuses. You failed because you didn’t care enough." "You let yourself fail. You should have seen your partner’s behavior and taken the work load all onto yourself. You let that happen and you let yourself fail." "College is so important and you have to go" ( "I mean, sometimes some people aren’t cut out to go to college." ) "I know you’re capable of more than a C, so why aren’t you doing better." "You’re not trying hard enough to get a job. People probably haven’t called you back because your hair is a strange color" (fyi, it was a sandy blonde). "Why can’t you just do things my way for once."
There’s more where that came from, but I think you get the point. The hilarious part is that my mom always asks “You should come talk to me if you have any problems, okay honey?” Yeah, okay. That’s exactly what I’m going to do after 20 some odd years of that.
THIS. tHIS. THis. This. THIS. this. this x infinity cause this shit is stupid and needs to be stopped and wow.
This was pretty much my entire life up till university. Till I realised that it was SO not important, and my own happiness was far better than any praise for grades.

This right here is what advertising should be. Not sexualizing men and women. Just clever little things like this.
